Regular instrument cross-checks keep your mental picture of the flight aligned with what the airplane is actually doing. In IFR, you rely on multiple instruments to confirm attitude, heading, altitude, and airspeed, and you continuously compare them to the flight path and navigation cues. If you skip these checks, a misreading or a failing instrument can go unnoticed, so you won’t detect a deviation from the desired course or altitude until it becomes obvious—by which time you may be off-route or off-profile. This erodes situational awareness, the awareness of where you are and what the aircraft is doing relative to your plan and the outside world. Autopilots and flight directors can hold a line, but they don’t fix hidden discrepancies; they follow the signals you provide, and without cross-checks you won’t know if those signals are faulty. So ignoring cross-checks doesn’t improve efficiency or reduce workload; it increases the chance of missed deviations and a loss of situational awareness.
